Green Lark: Wix to a 97 A+ PEER Score, green-hosted & carbon-measured

An environmental consultancy can't run a slow, US-hosted Wix site and ask clients to take sustainability seriously. We rebuilt Green Lark from scratch as a hand-coded, UK green-hosted static site that scores 97/100 A+ on our PEER audit, passes WCAG 2.2 AA with zero issues, and measures its real carbon footprint live on every page.

The Challenge

Green Lark Environmental Solutions is a chartered environmental consultancy led by Daniel Cope (CEnv). They advise organisations on sustainability, decarbonisation and environmental resilience — so their own website needed to be a proof point, not a contradiction.

The old site was built on Wix. It was hosted in the United States on a non-green grid, shipped over 5 MB and 475 requests per page, carried nearly a megabyte of JavaScript, and scored a carbon grade of C on desktop. For a firm that helps others cut emissions, the website was the weakest link in the story.

The brief: rebuild it as something genuinely sustainable — fast, accessible to WCAG 2.2 AA, hosted on UK green energy, and able to prove its footprint with live, independent measurement rather than green claims.

What We Built

A hand-coded static site, rebuilt from the ground up, with live per-page carbon measurement, privacy-first analytics, and a public audit page that shows the workings.

Hand-coded static rebuild

Vite + Handlebars partials, no page builder and no runtime framework. The result is a fraction of the old Wix weight: ~0.94 MB and 42 requests per page, down from 5.35 MB and 475.

Live per-page carbon

An EcoPigs badge in the footer reports each page's real emissions against the live UK grid — not a flat estimate. Visit the heavier pages and the number moves. The footprint is measured, not asserted.

"Our Digital Footprint" page

A public audit page that walks through the rebuild, the before/after numbers, the full PEER pillar breakdown, and links straight to the live EcoPigs report. The proof is on the site, in the open.

Privacy-first by consent

No cookies and no cross-site tracking. The carbon measurement only switches on when a visitor consents, via a lightweight banner. It honours Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control by default.

Considered typography

PT Serif for headings, self-hosted Inter for body — no third-party font requests. Clean, hyphen-free URLs replace the builder's machine paths, so every page reads and shares cleanly.

Green hosting + critical CSS

Moved off the US Wix grid to a UK green-hosted VPS (~50 gCO2e/kWh vs 371 before). Critical CSS is inlined per page and the rest loads async, so first paint lands in under half a second.

Every "after" figure is from the live EcoPigs scan of greenlark.co.uk; every "before" figure is from the same scanner run against the old Wix site.

Technical Highlights

Vite + Handlebars build — static HTML compiled from shared partials, with clean URLs (no .html) and per-page canonical tags. No runtime framework, no hydration cost.

Live carbon measurement — EcoPigs Digital Carbon v2.0 badge reporting per-page emissions against the live UK grid, plus a custom live-emissions panel on the Digital Footprint page.
